Premier League Primary Stars- One year on

Premier League Primary Stars- One year on

Premier League Primary Stars has published a new book featuring some talented young writers and a few familiar faces. This year marks their one year anniversary, and I was lucky enough to join the celebration.

Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.

Available to every primary school in England and Wales, it inspires girls and boys aged 5-11 in the classroom, the playground and on the sports field.

Teaching materials cover subjects from English and Maths to teamwork and PE, with free to download activity ideas, worksheets, lesson plans, fun assemblies and exclusive videos.

Learning is connected to the real world of sport to enthuse pupils when tackling challenging PSHE topics such as resilience, diversity, self-esteem and fair-play.

Professional football club staff work with teachers to deliver fun, educational sessions in a range of subjects within local partner schools.

The Writing Stars campaign had over 25,000 entries from primary school children across the country. The task was to write a poem about resilience, and boy were the entries superb. Judges included Lauren Child, Caleb Femi, Frank Lampard and Yannick Bolasie. Those selected were overseen by National Trust Director, Jonathan Douglas.

Jonathan Douglas said “This has been the National Literacy Trust’s most successful primary school age writing competition and shows the power football can play in inspiring young people to achieve in the classroom. The quality of entries exceeded all expectations, and the judges had a really difficult time making their decisions. This competition is a brilliant demonstration of the impact that Premier League Primary Stars had in its first year”.

It was great to sit down and discuss reading with kids. While my middle child Zachary has a fondness for reading, my eldest Dylan does not. Dan explained that he was the same growing up and not reading was almost a rebellious act. He added that he soon grew out of the phase and began to appreciate books, and now, he’s an author.

Relief! I was close to accepting that Dylan would hate books forever. The key to getting children to pick up a book is giving them material that will spark interest otherwise, it’ll seem like a chore. Magazines, Newspapers, even books remotely associated with their favourite thing, there are ways to get the most reluctant child reading!

Premier League Primary Stars has inspired so many children to read and enjoy learning, as a parent it’s refreshing to hear that a passion for football can lead to opening a multitude of opportunities for young children to learn.

As the evening came to an end, I was presented with a copy of Try, Try Again, along with some goodies from the Premier League Writing Stars themselves. Cressida happily signed a copy of her new book, The Wizards Of Once, which Zachary read within a week. He gave it a thumbs up btw!

OK, so I need this. I have two boys, both obsessed with football, but not fussed about reading. Plus the oldest is a Chelsea support so if Frank Lampard is involved then it should be a no brainer lol. If I don’t win a book, please tell me where I can buy one!!!! Loz
